Gamma-Dynacare Medical Laboratories (“Gamma-Dynacare”) and OSR Medical Inc. (“OSR”) announced today that they have entered into a Collaboration Agreement that will make the diagnosis of sleep disorders more accessible for patients.

It is well known that good quality sleep is critical for a healthy lifestyle, while non-restorative sleep adversely affects one’s health, performance and safety.  There are many known causes of sleep disorders, including sleep apnea, insomnia, snoring, teeth grinding and other neurological problems. The specialized physicians who direct OSR diagnose and treat patients suffering from these symptoms.  OSR has two state-of-the art sleep labs, located in Montreal and Laval, the only centres adhering to the Quebec guidelines and accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.

Under the new Collaboration Agreement, the full range of OSR’s sleep disorder testing services will now be available through Gamma-Dynacare’s network of 28 Patient Services Centres in Quebec, providing better access to these services for patients and their referring physicians.   Gamma-Dynacare will offer OSR polysomnography tests, consultation and illness management services on its requisition forms.  In addition, Gamma-Dynacare’s employees will be able to respond to inquiries about sleep medicine services, and supply portable monitoring devices so patients can be tested for sleep disorders in the comfort of their own homes. OSR will promote Gamma-Dynacare as its preferred provider of laboratory services in Quebec. The parties intend to collaborate for an initial term of five years.

“We are very excited at the prospect of OSR Medical and Gamma-Dynacare joining forces,” said Denis Bessette, Quebec sales director at Gamma-Dynacare. “As both businesses are committed to providing clients with accessible, specialized and secure health services, much will be gained through our collaboration. Most importantly, patients will benefit from better access to a broad array of high-quality health services that have been completely designed around the needs of the patient.”

Doctor Marcel Baltzan, Medical Director of OSR Medical’s Sleep Disorder Diagnostic Centres, is equally enthusiastic at the prospect of this collaboration. “Our patients and their clinicians will benefit from Gamma-Dynacare’s superior quality and customer service. Gamma-Dynacare’s patients and their referring physicians will now have timely access to OSR’s top-quality sleep medicine.”

Gamma-Dynacare Medical Laboratories announced today that Lakehead University, in partnership with Warnex PRO-DNA Services (a division of Gamma-Dynacare Medical Laboratories), has been awarded a grant from the Government of Canada to create a new North American mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) database for use in forensic investigations by law enforcement agencies.   [read more]

As announced today by the Honourable Tony Clement, Minister for FedNor, the federal government will contribute an investment of $338,050 as part of a $1.3 million initiative to create MitoNorth – a new DNA database for mtDNA, to support the use of mtDNA in forensic investigations.  Mitochondrial DNA testing is crucial in cases where nuclear DNA testing is not possible, such as for shed hairs at crime scenes, identification of missing persons (skeletal remains with degraded DNA) and when there is insufficient nuclear DNA.

The funding will be shared between Lakehead University’s Paleo DNA Laboratory and the Warnex PRO-DNA Services laboratory, both of which are based in Thunder Bay, Ontario and are the only two Canadian-based facilities to provide mtDNA services to law enforcement agencies.

“We are very pleased to obtain this funding, which will enable us to expand the use of our mtDNA testing services to benefit forensic investigators, law enforcement agencies and the legal community,” explained Dr. Yvan P. Côté, General Manager of Warnex PRO-DNA Services, a division of Gamma-Dynacare Medical Laboratories.   “This new database will significantly improve the use of mtDNA for law enforcement around the world, helping to incarcerate guilty parties or add credibility to the acquittal of innocent individuals.

“We look forward to working with our partners at Lakehead University to lead the creation of a Canadian mtDNA centre of excellence in Thunder Bay,” said Dr. Yvan P. Côté.

Gamma-Dynacare Medical Laboratories has been named one of Canada’s Top 100 Employers for 2009 and one of the Greater Toronto Area’s Top 75 Employers by Mediacorp Canada, Inc.

“We are honoured to be recognized as a top employer and proud of Gamma-Dynacare’s leadership within our industry in establishing an exceptional workplace,” said Naseem Somani, Chief Executive Officer, Gamma-Dynacare Medical Laboratories. “We’re in the business of caring for people, including our employees.  We have worked hard to establish an engaging and passionate workplace where people are supported, developed and recognized.”

Gamma-Dynacare was selected as part of an annual study conducted by Mediacorp Canada, Inc., publisher of the book “Canada’s Top 100 Employers”.  The study profiles organizations that offer exceptional workplace environments for employees based on a number of factors, including work atmosphere and communication, benefits, training and skills development and community involvement. Gamma-Dynacare will be profiled in the book and also was recognized in the October 13, 2008, special issue of Maclean’s magazine. In addition, as one of the GTA’s Top 75 Employers, Gamma-Dynacare was listed in a special editorial supplement to The Toronto Star on October 18, 2008.

Gamma-Dynacare’s submission to Mediacorp highlighted the employee programs, learning and development opportunities, health and safety practices, and community projects that demonstrate the company’s commitment to employees and help to create a spirited and engaging atmosphere. For example, events and celebrations held throughout the year include an annual REWARDS gala, which provides an opportunity for employees to be recognized for exceptional performance and to give recognition to colleagues they feel have earned their praise.

Gamma-Dynacare was recognized by the judges for its family-friendly benefit programs, which include a matching RSP plan, a great benefits plan, top-up benefits for parental and compassionate leaves, and starting employees at three weeks paid vacation plus two personal paid days off.

Gamma-Dynacare also received good marks for its training and skills development programs. In addition to tuition reimbursement and regular “Lunch and Learn” events, Gamma-Dynacare holds a continuing education symposium each year, covering topics that range from future healthcare trends to enhancing interpersonal skills. To help the children of its employees pursue higher education, Gamma-Dynacare awards up to 15 scholarship grants annually to eligible dependants of its employees, and has awarded nearly $200,000 under this program since its inception.
